Much of the world’s news and issues are spread and discovered through shared posts in the media such as the news, or social media. There is more news heard about issues that are actively and consistently shared on different platforms of social media. This could potentially cause areas that are affected by an outbreak to get less attention than other more well known areas. Also because the public is informed about what is happening, the government wants to maintain its image and popularity so it will appeal to the people and organizations involved in dealing with the outbreaks and the victims that are effected by the virus or infection that is spreading during the public health emergency.
Media coverage of issues like public health emergencies will increase support for the issue and can bring organizations together to work with the government in order to attempt to decrease the spread of the outbreak or even end it. It can increase efforts to end a public health emergency and increase support toward the issue. This can also result in greater government effort to regulate spread of the infection. This can be related to traveling to and from countries or isolation of infected people. For example, when Ebola was first observed in and spread through Africa, travel outside the continent was limited. Then, when it spread to the Unites States, travel outside the country and into the country was even more strictly monitored. The process of this happening could be seen on news channels and was discussed on many social media platforms from people who were involved in and concerned with the issue. Forms of media can be used to initiate action and possible call organizations or even the government’s attention to certain issues. The use of media in this issue can assist in dealing with public health emergencies.
Equal Medical Care: The media is not necessary in changing how equal the governments responses are to issues such as public health emergencies. The government already has legislation in place that fairly assesses the situations and outbreaks in the area they are occurring and how they should be properly dealt with. All people and how they will be affected by the government’s actions are taken into consideration. The media might increase the public’s knowledge regarding what the government is doing to handle an outbreak of a virus or infection but it does not play a significant role in the just way that the government handles such situations.
Bias in Legislation: Because the media is able to gain such support for certain situations, it is able to gain attention of larger organizations and even the government. When there is a large amount of attention brought to a certain issue, there is more support gained towards that specific issue. This creates bias in how the government handles outbreaks and public health emergencies. When the public is more invested in one side of an issue, the government may pay more attention to that one side as well because whatever they do will be covered in the media and they also want to appeal to the public.
